MA in Islamic Studies - Course Content

Qur'an and Hadiths Studies - Prof. Abdul Ali Hamid

The course is designed to provide the students with comprehensive knowledge of the Qur'an and the Sunnah.

The course is divided into two modules.

Module I covers:

1. Introduction to the Qur'an, covering collection and compilation.
2. Message of the Qur'an
3. Emergence and development of the Sciences of the Qur'an (Ulum Al-Qur'an)
4. Birth and development of the Qur'anic exegesis and a survey of the various trends in Exegesis.
5. An in-depth study of the works of selected scholars.
6. Exegesis in the present day with special reference to the al-Manar school.
7. Critical assessment of Western Qur'anic Studies.

Module II covers:

1. Introduction to the Hadith - definition and its authority in legal and theological opinion.
2. History of the recording of Hadith.
3. Classification of Hadith and the examination of the sanad (chain of narrators) and matn (the text).
4. Fabrication of Hadith and the efforts of the Muhaddithun to identify the authentic from the false.
5. Hadith studies in the modern time.
6. Some guidelines for the study of Hadith.
7. Selected texts from Hadith
